Alignment begins at the pelvis and ribs, and the correlating structures branch off from there. That is why, if, for example, we are looking at a foot alignment, we cannot address foot alignment without also considering the movement of the pelvis and ribs. Please consider if your ankle is hurting and we only look at your ankle, we may miss that your hips are pushed forward and the placement of the pelvis over your feet is putting your Achilles tendon in a chronically extended position, thus compressing the bones within the lower limb. By considering the “core” of skeletal structure, we can see the trickle effect branching out through the limbs.
The keystone to our entire structure lies within our pelvis, the sacrum.
The movement and position of the sacrum are of upmost importance in regaining motion, when this bone gets jammed (which is not uncommon) mobility is accessed through compensations.
The truth about movement is it occurs through this conduit:
BRAIN------------->BONES---------->MUSCLES
Without informing/introducing the brain on boney alignment, we ultimately are not going to reach our potential for healthy movement. Attempting to isolate body parts then seems ineffective. We are interconnected throughout our entire body, and one body part effects the movement of another. Think of it like the innerworkings of a grandfather clock, if you stuck a spatula in to one of the upper wheels and the bells stopped chiming on the hour, would you look at fixing the bells or the wheels when going into fix the clock? The approach used at Sugarhouse Training & Conditioning is to improve the body’s chains of movement by intentionally addressing the nervous, skeletal, and muscular systems in our training.
